I'm currently reading A Game of Thrones. It's good, but slow going.

 

1602 was great; I loved the history waffle.

Just finished The Women of Trachis; now I should be continuing my history textbooks and starting on Othello. I love my uni subjects, it makes me sound like a smartarse.

Seriously though, I'm supposed to be reading "The Carhullan Army" for a review, but I am having trouble plunging through it because of her writing style. Which is full of random full stops. Creating short sentences. That nullifies the fictional dream.

I also want to reread 1984.

 

Read a sentence. One at a time. Pause. Mull it over. Read another sentence. Reach satori.

Perhaps I should read her work as well, might enhance my own writing style...

 

As well as reading American Gods I'm rereading the complete X:Men Age of Apocalypse. Cyclops is a badass in AoA

 

Read the first four volumes of Star Wars: Legacy of the Force, and am currently making my way through #5. Frankly, this is the best 'epic' Star Wars novel sequence yet. Kicks the NJO's ass. Kicks Zahn's ass. Kicks everybody's ass (well, okay, Stover is still on par). If you have any interest in Star Wars, this is worth your time.

Caveat: works best if you've read Stover's Traitor, which is part of the NJO (but can work fairly well on its own).
Caveat the second: The Traviss and Allston books are very good (definitely Allston's best work yet). The Denning books are merely competent (although if you actually like his Forgotten Realms stuff, upgrade that assesment to something more favorable). Even so, it's worth it. At least so far.

Finished book 5 of Legacy of the Force. They're not kidding around. I <3 this series.

 

Just finished Edith Wharton's "The House of Mirth" -- hilarious! Now I've moved on to Oscar Wilde's "The Critic as Artist", but as witty as Wilde is, he just isn't as funny as Wharton.

I find Wilde to be more painfully beautiful than devilishly witty, though I've mostly read his short stories.

 

Thanks, Splunge and Chandos the Red! I'll try to post for a few days before disappearing for another couple of years.

Don't know if anyone here has recommended it yet, but "The Wizard of the Crow" by Ngugi wa Thiong'o is the best summary of post-colonial African politics that I've ever read. It's laugh-out-loud comic fiction, and yet it manages to hit on every high (and low) point of the last half-century. It's pret' long, but it'll fly by quickly since it's so funny.

 

Well, I was going to mention one of the Archie Digests as a "must read", but somehow I think Grey's is a bit more cerebral.

 

Made it through all the released Legacy of the Force books. Denning's second effort was probably his best yet, though that's not setting the bar terribly high. Definitely a series any Star Wars fan should check out.

Now making my way through Andrzej Sapkowski's The Last Wish. I think it lost something in translation, but it's solid so far.

Library Confidential: oddballs, geeks, and gangstas in the public library by Don Borchert

 

Finished The Grail Quest trilogy by Bernard Cornwell. Great stuff as usual from the guy. I'm starting His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman now. My mate lent 'em me.

 

Just finished "The Last Kingdom" by Bernard Cornwell (two replies in a row for the man!). Thank you Chandos for recommending it. It was excellent. I look forward to the rest of the series.

I am now reading Tom Wolfes "The Right Stuff". Fantastic so far.
