Those threads will be explored more fully. Seems like Erikson and Esslemont have divided up the characters which is why we have read so little about some of them despite them obviously being very important for the story and setting. Dassem Ultor is one of them and you will get quite a lot of him in Return.

Started "Watership Down" by Richard Adams. Remember finding the animated movie very scarey as a kid and I have read that it is essential reading. So far so good.

I believe Saber's talking about the Watership Down cartoon. Watching it as an adult, you will note how odd it is for a child's cartoon to have so much violence and blood. Watching it as a child... let's just say it's high octane nightmare fuel. I have no idea how or why it was aimed at children.

high octane nightmare fuel, heh, i like that.

i finished "the devil you know" by mike carey, the writer of the lucifer comics and a couple of runs on hellblazer. pretty good stuff. felix castor (the main character) is kind of like john constantine, but a nice guy instead of a prick.

now i'm reading "in the name of rome" by adrian goldsworthy. kind of like a who's who of 15 of the arguably greatest roman generals and an overview of their campaigns and most famous battles and strategies.

Took a short break from books, read some internet fiction. Recently stumbled on this old Arcanum playthrough. It has pictures and stuff. So far it's been an interesting read, I've never played Arcanum before.

The Phantom Tollbooth. My daughter and I are reading it together, taking turns each paragraph. What a great book! I highly recommend it to anyone with kids from 8 to 18.

Is that the Dragonlance universe? I stopped after the war of souls trilogy. I dunno, everything after the Twins trilogy is not as good... :(

No Tri, this series was based on another game world. I liked their non-Krynn series'. The Death Gate Cycle and The Darksword series were pretty decent reads. Some of the later DL stuff got lame though.

Just started William Faulkner's Go down, Moses. Still too early to say anything about it except it seems to be in typical Faulkner fashion.

The Twins trilogy is my favourite but Dragon of Summer Flame was quite good too. The Second Generation was odd because it seems so disconnected from everything (and from itself) but some of the stories take on a very different meaning when you get into Summer Flame. War of Souls had some great bits but I really didn't like the whole "I stole it all" business, it just seemed to come out of nowhere even though the build up to it had some really good scenes, such as the death of you-know-who at the end of book 2. Death Gate is next on my to-read list actually, I've heard some very good things about it.

To me, even the Twins trilogy, although quite enjoyable, didn't compare to the original books. They were great! The problem I have with Dragons of summer flame is

that it seems there were too much effort in erasing everything magical. Almost every surviving character from the first books died in this one, it's hinted that the elves go away, same for the gods and for magic (although they put a spin on this in the following books, maybe because of bad fan reaction?). It just felt like they were trying too hard to end it.

Somehow Dragonlance just does not have it. I prefer Forgotten realms and Ebberon.

The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon.

Tri - I prefer the Twins to the original trilogy actually. The Chronicles felt too much like the novelisation of a D&D campaign (which is exactly how they started IIRC) rather than novels in their own right. I think your problem with Summer Flame comes from TSR's attempt to radically change the magic system in Dragonlance. I think the reason they reverted back to the regular one with War of Souls was because WotC had taken over by then and probably wanted the older system back.
