If I or you dropped a million dollars on the lawsuit great. But neither of us have that kind of money.

But what you could do is prod people in Illinois to be aware of and support the lawsuit. This includes state officials there-whom you are a constituent of. If you read the paper write a letter to the editor.

One of the problems with gerrymandering is that many people don't know about it.

The other is being willing to step forward and oppose it-especially when someone's own party was part of it somewhere. I find it suspicious that a several Republican AGs from other states have come to defend gerrymandering at the same time my governor (who signed off on these gerrymandered maps and the rigged elections that are part of them) is traveling the US supporting other Republicans as head of the Republican governor's association.

But state officials that came forward to support the lawsuit to overturn gerrymandering would (as either Democratic or Republican party members) be pushing for having votes and elections count again-and that is supporting democracy with a small d.

Local elections are an interesting thing. I believe most people don't care too much as they don't think the local guys can screw things up too badly. In my town, pretty much anyone who wants an office can get one as most local elections are very low turnout and mostly unopposed. It is more like who wants to coach the "D" team in soccer. If someone volunteers, we let them. The coach for the "A" team selection can be a bloodbath. About the only times I can remember people being heated about local issues are when there are property tax increase votes on the ballot. Those excite people and even then the turnout is nothing like for a Presidential election (and I live in a state where it doesn't matter)
