You are too high level really for Ragefire chasm. It is a 12-16 instance or somesuch. At 21 you should try to go Wailing Caverns. I have not done any low end instance properly since the first few months of the game but you should try but let it go and abandon the quests when they turn grey.

Also, if you are having problems levelling, dying and stuff you are doing something very very wrong. Everything has been made way easier, way more accesible and it is designed to be rushed through without any problem and without much of a clue. First, be careful with how you pull. Take one monster at a time and do not be afraid to run away if things appear to go out of hand. Most classes can take on elite monsters their own level if they use their cooldowns and maybe a potion. If you have decided to go with your mage I would recommend you to put all your points in frost as it gives you that extra bit of control that will make things more stable and easier. Gear at your level is not really nescessary, a caster can level naked without too much problems up to almost lvl40. Also, do not buy stuff on the AH, the prices are completely screwed for new people. Most of the low level characters are alts with vastly greater resources than a first time character can ever hope to achieve. Stay away from the AH except to sell. Quest rewards and whatever you find is enough to get by. When you do have the option of choosing gear you should always go spellpower on your mage. Spellpower spellpower spellpower. Oh, where did you get that blue you sold? If it was BOP it must have been from an instance and seeing as you could not use it I am wondering if you "ninjaed" it? Only roll need on things you can use and are upgrades for you, roll greed on everything else.

Other than that, I guess you just have to experience and explore the game as best as you can, we have all been newbies one time or another and that sense of cluelessnes is something you will miss when you get more experienced. I would say I probably had the most fun in the game when I had no idea whatsoever about anything.

Oh, you said you had gotten one boost already, boosts are not great you really do not experience the content the way it is supposed to be experienced but it is better than nothing. Do not be one of those jerks who run around begging strangers for boosts and never pay for someone to boost you but if you see someone who is about to get boosted or someone in your guild is do not be shy to ask if you can tag along

At 21 you should be looking for groups for WC, SFK, RFK, and BFD. RFC is too low, and anything else is too high. I would run those with an actual 5 man group of people at or around your level. You will learn more about the game, your class, and how to interact with other players and classes in-game. Dungeons are usually where you have your best and worst experiences, and the former can often gain you long-time in-game friends.

The problem is finding groups, it generally takes hours to get a group to a lowbie instance and the risk that it falls apart before you are done is very high. Put yourself in the LFG queue and keep your eyes open but dont spend all your time trying to fix groups. What illusion says is right, you can get the best experiences and friendships during instance runs but sadly they are hard to come by at low levels.

The Quests I have there show up as level 16, so I have a chance at least. I'd like to catch a couple guild mates for the run.

Where I get screwed up is when a creature I don't engage joins in the fray while I'm dealing with the creature I just pulled. Only the Ret pally and Wizzard have much luck in such situations, but even then there can still be trouble. But I usually don't realize I'm in trouble until it's too late. Another problem I have is if something gets away and returns with friends. That's something my pally is especially vulnerable too...

I have about half my points there. I may pay the gold to move some points from Arcane to buff out my frost. I'll keep the two points I spent to reduce the cool down on my one fire spell though. I use it when something gets too close...

It was on the instance run. First off, I thought it was Ragefire Chasm, but it was the one in the southern barrens instead. I still went. The looting was basically set to whoever got to the corpse first. The 61 Deathknight left the corpses alone, and the other guy got three blues. Nothing relevent to me anyway. I did end up with some nice greens for my mage and hunter...

Again, I didn't realize that the guy organizing the run was a 61 death knight helping his buddy, and that it wasn't the one I was hoping for. I went anyway, and got some nice loot though...

I'm still 20 for now. If worst comes to worst, I wonder if I could solo it at 21 with the gear upgrades?

That's the trouble. I haven't found too many people around my level to run with. I could check out my guild members to see who's interested next time I play my mage during busier hours...

You'll learn how to handle running mobs, it's just experience. You'll save your damage attacks on CD and stun attacks. Say, you're fighting a mob on your ret pala and your seal judgement is ready to be used, but the mob is on 30%, just wait... then use it when he's about to run. Things like that. Hammer of Justice is also good for runners. Mages it's easier because of Frost Nova, mobs should never have a chance to go anywhere against a mage. Spec frost, DON'T cross talent trees!! Stick to one tree for now. Crossing trees is for later. With a mage, when you get used to playing it, you'll chain pull a load of mobs, Nova them, Blizzard, Cone of Cold, Nova and rinse and repeat. But for now, try to take mobs one at a time. It's all experience. Stick away from the AH though. Quest rewards are plenty good enough for now.

Are you talking about fireblast? It is never useful to put points there, one of those mostly "worthless" talents, it can be nice mostly for PvP but if you want to PvP you shouldn't spec fire at all so there you go. Your fireblast will be ready for pretty much every mob without improving it. As Barmy say, stick to one tree and that tree should be frost for you. With a few more points in frost no monster should ever be able to reach you, you will have total control even against most elite mobs. If it can be slowed it can be killed.

You realy need to keep your eyes open for adds, be aware of your surroundings but even so, as a mage you should not have much problems even with multiple adds. It is just a matter of how much mana you want to spend. Frostnova and polymorph are your friends and if things get really hairy, do not hesitate to start spamming arcane explosions until everything around you is dead.

I would advise against trying to solo any instance at your level and with your lack of experience. Generally by the time you are able to solo an instance there is nothing there for you except maybe to check it out. Bosses can't be slowed and many hit rather hard especially on a clothie. I know it is probably boring not to get to experience all the instances but the vast majority of the player base is well beyond that content and I would say that you are lucky if you get one or two instance runs during the time you level to 70. Most low level characters are alts as has been mentioned and they tend to have friends who boost them. I have a few friends I swap boosts with just to get the quests done and get the fancy gear. You do not need those things though, plenty of interesting things going on outside the dungeons but as I said, join the LFG channel when you are online and keep an eye on what they are looking for. Especially if it is LF1M dps or something. If they have a tank and a healer already you are set and you can even be so lucky that you get in a group with people who really know the business and then you can be in for some of the best gaming experiences you can imagine. Unless you are a noob who constantly screw up.

If you get in a group as a mage ask if they want you to polymorph something in the packs, usually the tank or someone can put a mark for you and throw your frostbolts on the monster the tank is tanking, refrain from AoE unless things are really going bad. If you do that you might make a good impression and be invited to more groups in the future. Also do not hesitate to say that it is your first character and that you are new to the game, people will cut you a lot more slack then and many will actually go through quite a lot of effor to help you out. Many many players, me included, have a soft spot for real newbies and want to give them as good an impression as possible of the game. Then again, there are plenty of jerks aroudn so your experience may vary.

You don't have to be exactly 21, any of those instances I listed are 18-25. You could make a group by spamming trade chat in a city or using the LFG feature(default button is I).

I have been doing that against the Troggs that I've been fighting in Southern Loch Modan. When I can control the pace, it works like a charm!

Don't have Cone of Cold yet. Am level 22 now, what looks like some nice gear. Just need the practice...

Yes, It works wonders when a creature gets in close. It's a quick hit of fire damage. I spent the two points to reduce the Cool down time. It should get me through until I have so much cold that I don't have room for it on the action bar...

I wasn't impressed with Polymorph, but I do keep it on an action bar. I save the numbered ones for damage dealing effects. Arcane Explosions and Arcane Missles are among my favourite attack spells...

I chose my horde servers because I have family and friends that play on them. My mage received 2 Netherweave bags and some metal I could auction off for about 27G from my cousins, and the Orc Warrior (who's settling into the number 3 roll) was just given 20 G to do his shopping by a RL friend...

Actually tried to use that channel today, but no luck for rfc. I have two characters that should be looking at rfc (3 and 4 on the list). My Mage needs to clean up the quest log and my inventory a bit before tackling the Wailing Caverns or the other Dungeon that it's sending me to. My Pally should be looking at Deadmines...

Because we've had a high level guy that did most of the fighting, I found that Arcane Missles got the ones that tried to run away from him. I'm hoping to try an instance run with guys my own level...

I have mentioned that to some players I've interacted with...

Arcane missiles look pretty but you should never ever use them at your level. Sure it is comfortable that you press one tmie and then you get a 5s channel of a spell but the damage is weak and the mana cost is high. If you have improved your frost talents use them. All mages use fireblast constantly but even unimproved you should have it ready for every mob unless you kill things really really fast. As for arcane explosion, it is an "oh ****" spell only to be used against three or more mobs. Horrendously ineffecient against single or even double mobs. Frostbolt both slows and kills mobs that tries to run away, AM used to follow the target around the world if they had started channeling but no more. Do they run out of range they are gone and they have a very short range. 30 yards compared to talented frost with 36 or talented fire with 41. Range matter, those six yards is an extra frostbolt before they reach you so always pull from max range.

You will not run out of space on your action bars, you just need to put up more bars. Need to keep all your spells on your bars. Can't run around checking your spellbook in an emergency.

It's some damage to do while I'm waiting for Fireburst to cool down. Frostbolt and fireball are just too slow.

Frostbolt is still shorter in range than Fireball. I get Frostbolt and AM at the same range, but when I have something in my face because the Frostbolt didn't slow them enough, I take AM because it seems to be better DPS than Frostbolt or Fireball...

You do not want to channel a spell with monsters hitting you. They interrupt the channel but why would the monsters reach you? You need to take talents to improve range and you pull by frostbolt, frostbolt, frostbolt, fireblast if the mob isnt dead by now you can either use a cone of cold and hope it dies or your frost nova, take three steps back and unload a shatter frostbolt on it. Do not let the monsters hit you unless they are more or less dead already and you can wand them to death.

The entire point of the mage is mobility, nothing should ever touch you. Keep singing MC Hammer in your mind when you play and lead both monsters and other players on a merry dance. When you learn how to kite properly then there is very little you can't do with your mage.

Anyone else here played a DK at all? I'm currently leveling mine and I have to say...it's the easiest thing I've ever leveled by far. I had to have help for maybe a total of 20 including ring of blood and durn (not counting instances)quests between 58 and 74(current level)

I plan on it being a tank first, dps 2nd but we'll see how it ends up going for raid composition. Juggling the runes can be a pain at times, especially if I go into pally tanking mode and just go through a wrong rotation.

I started levelling a DK and got it to 65 but I have barely played at all the last month and very little the month before. I think they made the DK levelling extremely easy and smooth just to get them to max level asap and being hte new class it was bound to be a bit unbalanced a few months while they try to fill up the ranks before the balance it properly.

I still hold WoW as one of the best games all categories ever but I have spent almost a full year in game in total so I have lost some of the drive. Still looking forward to Ulduar quite a bit.

hmm I will hit 80 on my dk today. I should be able to get a much better idea of what I think of them from a few heroics and some naxx sometime next week.

Just thought I should post to let you know that I'm still alive. I'm up to 11 characters, and may have more yet to work on as a cousin recently returned to the game on a different server. My Undead Mage has become my Number 1, and is now up to level 31. I'm getting a feel for the Paladin, Warrior, Warlock and Hunter as well.

The onlything I don't really like that I've encountered is the Night Elf. I'm not crazy about the look. I'm not sold on the Rogue either. I still need to try the Druid and Dranei...

I have toyed a bit with my old mage the last week or two, he is quite fun. Up to level 77 and can finally use my flying mount again, no more travelling at a snail's pace. I also rediscovered the joys of a frost spec, ah, the survivability and the sheer evilness of slowing and freezing your opponents without giving them the slightest chance of ever touching you. Ah, the Lich King buff to blizzard is also absolutely awesome. The aoe power now is silly, can easily take 10 ten mobs and kill them without breaking a sweat.

Gnarff, Gnarff, you wont experience the game if you keep switching like that. Pick a character, level it and experience the game what you are doing now is rpetty much just doing the same areas over and over again right after each other.

You guys gotta be kiddin' me..

I came here on an exile from WoW after four years of raiding to get back with some old favorites such as Icewind Dale 2 and what do I find? A subforum dedicated to just WoW. :jawdrop:

Although the total lack of i-know-it-all attitude is more than refreshing for a change. :)

The problem I'm having now is that two cousins that are on my ass to level my Druid (currently level 30) think they can do it by having their high level characters kill everything for me. I just have this feeling that I'll have a level 80 passenger by the time they're done, so I still won't be needed for raiding. I'm already seeing instance runs failing because elements like teamwork and understanding your character are neglected in an obsessive rush to just get your levels. I tried to run one instance where the Paladin didn't even use an aura? Another guy that wanted me to two-man RFC with him (nevermind that we're both over level 20) was a Pally that didn't even do the Ressurection quest. I'm worried that if I do try to fast track the levelling like my cousins are telling me to I'll be one of those guys with a high level character and no clue how to use it...
