WTF? I dual-class Imoen into a Mage and I only get one weapon slot!

I understand this, but at the end of the day there's nothing you can do about that as the only weapon which can switch between long/short range is the returning axe that you get from Pratt and his posse and a mage/thief can't use it. Imoen is at her best as a dualled mage/thief so if you want her in your party, it's a risk you're going to have to take.

I was trying to make the best out of a bad situation. Didn't work apparently.

It's certainly annoying. If the +4 bonus to enemies' hit rolls is implemented in bg1, then it would be much easier for them to interrupt immie's spells up close. this is exceptionally annoying when you are "waylaid by enemies and must defend yourself." At least with a hand to hand weapon, immie would be more likely to get off her mirror image / invisibility spell or whatever.

that said, I tried d/cing Immie for the first time recently. she's doing fine with just the light crossbow of speed. Not really missing the melee weapon at all. One solution is to give her the Cloak of the Wolf and morph her if necessary. Ive got it but havent had to use it yet.

I agree with San Ti, actually if you want to dual class, you can always turn Shar Teel into a thief (and a great thief by the way) or Xzar into a ... Cleric (you just have to use a book that will increase his WIS to 17) I love this game!
Why evil characters are always more fun than goody two shoes?

I had a problem with Cloak of the Wolf: I couldn't morph back! Maybe it was just a glitch in my game, or I forgot to download a patch; but save before you try it.
