The first step is to speak to the mayor the village, Renengild, in her home which is at #24 on the Stalwart Village map. Renengild will want you to find a way into Durgan's Battery, as she sees it as a way to advance the fortunes of Stalwart Village. That in itself also advances the Durgan's Battery quest.
During that same conversation, she will also view a nearby hermit named Galvino as a possible source of info for how to get into the Battery itself. It is this particular branch of the conversation that triggers the quest.
You now have to reach Galvino himself, who is at #46 of the Main Floor map. Be warned that you'll have to battle a LOT of Constructs with dangerous powers such as the ability to cast Malignant Cloud and the ability to self-detonate and cause massive damage on anyone nearby. At the very minimum you will need to open the door leading to Galvino at #45 with the Workshop Key, which is at #13.
Once you do reach Galvino, one of the key points of the conversation is that you can get some limited assistance from him in entering Durgan's Battery, in the form of Galvino's Resonance Amplifier which can help you find a Dwarven soul in Stalwart Village that can reveal a cantec that will allow entry.
Galvino's Resonance Amplifier, once equipped in a quick-item slot, allows you to emit a green wave within a certain radius around yourself. If anybody nearby can be Awakened so as to offer information on the cantecs, that person's soul aura will also emit a green light within a smaller radius around themselves. There are two individuals within Stalwart Village who respond in such a way to Galvino's Resonance Amplifier.
One such individual is Owynna, who's at #7 on the first floor of Gref's Rest. You can use Galvino's Resonance Amplifier, then read her soul, and then choose to Awaken her. It turns out that her past life was a captain of the guard in Durgan's Battery, Gergun.
Clever, Honest and Diplomatic replies are possible once Gergun first surfaces. Aggressive and Rational replies are available immediately thereafter. Deceptive, Honest and Stoic replies are available when Gergun counters with a proposition of his own. It is in any event relatively little trouble to get the needed cantec from this conversation.
Another and riskier possibility is Taena, whose house is at #25 on the Stalwart Village map. You can use Galvino's Resonance Amplifier, then read her soul, and then Awaken her. It turns out that she was a particularly aggressive and violent member of a Dwarven mining crew named Zenove.
Progress after that requires making either a Perception check of 15, a Resolve check of 16 which also increases Deceptive disposition, or a Lore check of 5. If you choose any dialogue option that does not involve a successful check once Zenove emerges within Teana's body, then Zenove in control of Teana's body will attack you.
If you make a successful 1st check, you then need to make a second successful one. If you have previously made a Perception check of 15 or a Resolve check of 16, you would then need to make a Resolve check of 17 which increases Deceptive disposition, a Lore check of 7, or an Intellect check of 16. If you have previously made a Lore check of 5, you can then make a Resolve check of 17 which increases Deceptive disposition or an Intellect check of 14. And again, choosing a dialogue option that does not involve a successful check will lead to Zenove attacking while in control of Teana.
If Teana attacked you, you will not gain the cantec and you'll have to try things out with Owynna. If you succeed at two checks, that is when Zenove will reveal the cantec.
Now you have a choice as to whether to push down Zenove and let Teana have back control of her body, or whether you push Teana down and let Zenove emerge. The former allows you to walk away peacefully. The latter means Zenove will attack you and you'll have to kill Teana's body.
The acquisition of the cantec marks the conclusion of the quest. It also marks progress for completing the Durgan's Battery quest.
